London Is For Laurens

I got to go to London for Emma & Micha's wedding. It was the first of many journeys across the UK that I have taken in the last month, and so while I was there I remember drinking in the feeling of being in an exciting place all by my self. I've written enough sappy posts about Aidan for everyone to feel secure in the fact that I adore him, so I'll go ahead and elaborate and tell you that sometimes there is nothing that I love more than just exploring a place on my own. The primary and obvious advantage is that it means that I can do whatever I want. It's kind of awesome. I can go to see photography exhibits, and to eat vegetarian food. I can pop into Anthropologie just for a browse, and if I really want to buy something there is no one making disapproving noises over my shoulder. When I'm tired, if I feel like it I can buy a heinously over priced ticket to go and see X-Men: First Class because sometimes it's good to reconnect with my movie star boyfriend. Street photography is also a little less awkward when I am on my own, and it is one of my favorite things to do. Here are my spoils.*

Lotte & David

Hooray for Lotte & David! I loved them and I can't wait to photograph their wedding in one month's time. Lotte found me through Offbeat Bride, which is always a sign of good things to come. I took a quick trip down to Bristol for their engagement shoot, and I had so much fun that I totally forgot that I was working. I tried out my 35mm holga contraption on them, which is what creates these super long panoramics like the one you see above. Most importantly, Lotte and David are so incredably great together, and I can't believe that I'm the lucky photographer who gets to photograph their wedding. Congratulations Lotte & David!

Kat & Derek

Kat and Derek actually eloped to NYC. They were married in Central Park with only a few of their nearest and dearest present. Very romantic, right? They are friends of mine from the Texas days. Like Aidan (my husband), after getting his PhD at UT, Derek was called to Scotland for philosophical endeavors. When he left Texas, he left us his adorable Hyde Park garage apartment, and all of his awesome furniture. So of course, when I found out that they were engaged I demanded to be their wedding photographer, and when I found out that they were eloping to NYC, I revised my demands to them allowing me to take some pictures of them to celebrate their marriage. So here they are all dolled up in their wedding clothes, looking pretty wonderful together I think. Congratulations Kat & Derek!

Shiloh & Christian

I loved Shiloh and Christian's wedding with my whole heart. I wish I could put my finger on exactly what made it so special, so that I could tell you the perfect recipe for a beautiful, magical, wonderful wedding, but I can't. However, I'll go ahead tell you a few things about it anyways. First off Shiloh is an avid reader of A Practical Wedding, which never hurt anyone. Secondly, so many of Shiloh and Christian's family and friends came out to Cumbria for the weekend, and camped, and joined together to make the day especially festive with things like flowers from Christian's mother's garden, and incredible food cooked by Shiloh's super talented brother. There were friends & family setting up the hall in the morning, friends & family doing dishes after the supper, and all the while people were having a great time. There was a lovely mile-long stroll through the countryside from the house to the reception hall and back again. It was positively romantic. Also I could seriously take pictures of Shiloh's blue eyes all day, actually I could take pictures of her and Christian together all day because they are so obviously and beautifully in love with each other. Thanks to everyone for being so welcoming and so awesome, and above all else: Congratulations to Christian & Shiloh!

A Color Slide Sunset

Here are some pictures that I took all the way back in December while I was waiting for my UK settlement visa. Like many bureaucratic endeavors my visa wound up taking a lot longer than I had anticipated, and so I spent a rather stressful month couch surfing my way across North Carolina. I started with a week at my grandfather's house by the beach. I love how the shoreline reflects the sunset when the waves recede, and how the beach makes it impossible not to loose myself in admiring simple yet important things like color, texture, line, shape, and light. This at least was how I tried to distract myself from the visa stress, and the being away from Aidan stress, and the leaving behind everything and everyone in Austin stress. And it worked, sort of, for a little while. There may have been a morning or two of me crying dramatically into my coffee, but by evening time here I was again, camera in hand.

Holga + Wedding = Love (Wherein I Get a Little Geeky)

First things first: While I usually lead a post with a picture of the happy couple somehow the shots that I grabbed with my holga from Carrie & Jonathan's wedding wound up being a lot about Carrie. She is so beautiful, and these first two pictures especially make me smile every time I see them. There is something just so thrilling about film to me. Film plays a little hard to get, and the wait makes the reward that much better. This year I've been experimenting with taking film cameras with me to weddings, and I've discovered that the images that I'm the most drawn to actually come from the cheapest camera I've got: my holga. I adore the richness of medium format film, and I love shooting in Squares. My other medium format camera is a Mamiya, but it shoots 4x5 format which sometimes feels a little lame when compared with the boldness of squares. I love the dreamy quality that the holga produces. It's nice too that it's so lite weight. I usually carry two pretty heavy digital cameras and it works well that I can hang my holga around my neck and pretty much forget about it until the right moment comes up. All of which is to say that you can expect to see a lot more of these kinds of pictures, as well as some experimentation with other formats and films from me in the coming months. I am excited.

Sarah & Gary

I'm so excited to be working with Sarah and Gary, because really: aren't they just too adorable? Sarah was the first Scottish bride to find me on Offbeat Bride and it was so nice to finally get to meet her and Gary. If you can believe it this is also the first shoot that I have done in Aberdeen, so that was pretty cool too. Sarah suggested we check out this cute little fishing village which is conveniently located right next to the sea. I had a great time photographing them, and I can't believe I have to wait until June of next year for their awesome backyard bbq wedding. I just know it's going to be a blast. I officially live in Scotland all the time now. This means that engagement shoots have become ridiculously easy, especially if I'm working with an adorable couple like Carrie & Jonathan. All I had to do was step back and let these two frolic around the gorgeous landscape. It was a wee bit chilly, but the sun came out for us, and I'm pretty sure we all had a good time. Allison & Jason's Riverside Wedding

Allison & Jason had a lovely wedding at Fiesta Gardens. I could not have loved this venue more. In so many ways it was really simple, but it was right on the river, it had these adorable bleachers (above), and there was such perfect light as the sun went down. There were so many adorable details from the wildflowers in antique glasses, to Jason's wedding ring with Allison's finger print on it, to all of the fabulous decorations that Allison and Jason DIYed. Of course Allison and Jason were stunning together, and there are some really fun pictures from their brief portrait session. I'm certain that all of their guests had a blast at the party that followed, and all in all it was a wonderful day. Congratulations to Allison and Jason!

Amanda & Andrew's Underwater Wedding Day Kiss

There are so many awesome things about Amanda & Andrew's wedding that I don't even know where to start. I guess what's most important is that they are really awesome people who are completely and utterly adorable together. I figured this out when I first met up with them for their engagement shoot, but their wedding truly confirms their adorableness. They found an awesome house on craigslist for their venue, and had a simple Sunday brunch wedding with their closest family and friends. Amanda was stunning in her wedding dress, her brother was the officiant, the ceremony was short, sweet, and joyful. Andrew made their wedding rings out of molds of their fingers: the outside of each ring is an exact contour of the other one's finger. Is this not the MOST romantic thing you have ever heard? But wait! It get's better: after the meal some of their friends met them down at Barton Springs, and so I was able to use an underwater film camrea. Abby & Steven

Abby and Steven's wedding was totally magical. They were married at The Star Hill Ranch, which is one of my favorite venues in Austin as it is set up as a tiny little western village with an adorable chapel, barbershop, and perfectly restored early 19th century buildings. All of the details for the wedding were totally classic and yet unique from the flowers, to Abby's shoes, and don't get me started on how utterly beautiful she looked in her gorgeous wedding dress. It was a lovely wedding with perfect light, a tearful ceremony, and a rockin' good party. Congratulations to Abby & Steven!

Erinn & Jimmy

Erinn and Jimmy had the sweetest wedding in downtown Austin. The day started with Erinn getting ready and hanging out with her family at the Driskill Hotel. There were delicious snacks, lots of cute little ones, and plenty of good cheer as Erinn and the wedding party got all gussied up. After a fun portrait session from one of the balconies, we all headed down to The Old Pecan Street Cafe for the lovely ceremony, during which I don't think there was a dry eye in the room. Then the music started playing and everyone danced the night away. Erinn is possibly the sweetest woman to ever walk the planet, and was just gorgeous in her wedding dress and and veil. Everyone was incredibly kind to both me and Zach on this loveliest of days, and we had a wonderful time shooting this wedding. Congratulations to Erinn & Jimmy!

Jillian & Paul

Jillian and Paul had a lovely wedding at One Devonshire Gardens in Glasgow. Jillian looked gorgeous in her gauzy violet wedding dress that she designed and sewed herself, and her attendants were full of laughter and good spirits as she prepared for her wedding. The ceremony was short and sweet, and the look on Paul's face as Jillian walked down the aisle slays me every time I see it. Jillian told me that she didn't want any stiff or super formal pictures so we had a lot of fun with the bride & groom and family portraits. It was a day full of heartfelt emotions and lighthearted hilarity, and all in all was a wonderful wedding. Congratulations to Jillian & Paul!

Jill & Chris's Big Day At The Little....

Oh I am a lucky wedding photographer. Jill and Chris are another one of those UK couples who I have been oh so fortunate to work with, and their wedding was soooooo awesome (so awesome). Let us start by admiring how lovely Jill looked in her royal blue wedding dress which was truly spectacular. Their ceremony was held at an adorable cinema in Bath called The Little Theater, and before Jill walked down the aisle they played this awesome stop-action-lego movie that I have posted just below. Watch it and you will understand why I was so happy to work with them: a) they are nerds who b) like Star Wars and c) are really creative and hilarious. Moving on... as if this weren't awesome enough, after taking bride & groom portraits in the projection booth (!!!), everyone got to ride over to the reception venue in a red double decker bus. The food was to die for, the speeches hilarious, and then there was Céilidh dancing. Towards the end of the festivities, Jill and Chris invited their guests to release Chinese lanterns into the sky, which was a beautiful end to a perfect day. A tremendous thank you to Jill and Chris for being so incredibly sweet to me on their wedding day, and thanks once again to Offbeat Bride for helping me to find this awesome couple. Kim & Kieran, A London Wedding

I think I mentioned before that all of the lovely couples that I've worked with in the UK have been extra super wonderful. Kim and Kieran were no exception, and by extra wonderful I mean that I know things are going to go well when I meet a bride for the first time on her wedding day and she greets me with a kiss on the cheek. I've never met more joyful, fun, sincere people than Kim & Kieran, and their wedding was a blast. Don't you just adore Kim's butterfly patterned wedding dress? Don't you just love Kieran's facial expressions? Isn't Kim one of the prettiest brides you've ever seen? Arn't they adorable together? I know. I feel the same way. Shooting weddings in London is awesome because it means that you get to do things like bride and groom portraits at places like St. Paul's Cathedral, and maybe the rest of your shooting can be done in awesome venues like The Stationer's Company, where they've got the best natural light you've ever seen. I want to sincerely thank Kim and Kieran for being so incredibly kind to my foreign self on their wedding day, as well as Offbeat Bride for telling us about each other. It was magic. Awww, this wedding was the sweetest. Jessica and Hannibal had a lovely wedding out in the Hill Country. Truly these two could not have been cuter together, and everyone present clearly had a great time. Bonnie's Downtown Austin Bridal Shoot

This bridal shoot was so much fun. You may remember Bonnie from her awesome engagement shoot where she and her fiance Josh had a blast jumping through sprinklers. In a similar spirit Bonnie was happy to walk around downtown Austin in her lovely dress in search of the best views. We chose the top of Shakespeare's Pub, the front of the Alamo cinema, and a parking lot off of W 6th street. Bonnie and Josh's wedding was the last wedding that I shot in Austin and it was a great time! I can't wait to post the pictures, but until then feast your eyes on this lovely bride.

Kirsten & Derek: A Belfast Engagement

Hooray for Kirsten and Derek! They are so much fun, and so funny, and smart, and awesome! I hopped a ferry over to Belfast, to meet with them and do an engagement shoot. We took a wonder round to the club where they first met, then through to the botanical gardens and finally wound up at the Ulster museum, where they insisted on taking me inside and showing me an exhibit on "The Troubles". By this point I was swooning: I do love it when my couples are a tad on the nerdy side. I don't know what's up with the British Isles, and how it became so full of incredibly sweet wonderful people to work with. I shall be blogging some more awesome UK weddings in the coming week, and seriously each one was filled with friendly, laid back, and creative folks having a really awesome time. I'm so excited that this is going to be my life now. Thanks to Kirsten and Derek for showing me such a great time and for being so cute together, and above all: congratulations!!!!

Allison & Jason

Allison & Jason's wedding is swiftly approaching, and Zach and I are really excited. Their engagement shoot was laid back and fun. We went out to the greenbelt (twice, once we had to give up because of the rain) and had a great time climbing over waterfalls, shooting water animals, and encountering wild life. Frankie & Ronnie & My First Scottish Wedding

So ah, is it weird for your heart to do a flip when you see pictures of your in-laws kissing? If so then I am weird because the above photo gets me every time, and it is of my sister-in-law Frankie and her brand new husband Ronnie. I'm not trying to sound all 'oh I'm such a great photographer look at this picture' because though I am quite pleased with the lighting, it's not really about that. I think it's his hand placed ever so tenderly on her face that gets me, or maybe it's because she looks like she's straight out of a Jane Austin novel (oh Jane Austen, how I adore thee, as does Frankie, as does her Mum), or maybe it is actually because they are now apart of my brand new family and this picture makes me feel really happy about that. Whatever the reason I was thrilled to be photographing their wedding, and it was a wonderful time. They were married in Govan Old Parish Church, Frankie's Mum (a seriously awesome and inspiring woman) was the presiding minister, Ronnie's mum did a reading during the ceremony in Gaelic, their reception was held at the hall in the Pearce Institute. I have included a family formal picture kindly taken by exceptionally talented Elena, because it is after all my brand new family and for those who are curious about what I look like, that's pretty much it. I always tell people that I am the worst at having my photo taken, and I think this proves it definitively. In any case this was such a lovely and fun wedding, and I hope you will enjoy the pictures. Chris & Priscilla's Wonderful Engagement

So I think I might almost be more excited about Chris and Priscilla's wedding that I was about my own wedding. Almost. Chris and Priscilla are just so freaking cute together, they are wonderful to work with, and they seem so right on with what they want there wedding to be about. Also, it was Priscilla who introduced me to A Practical Wedding, which along with Offbeat Bride are my most favoritest of wedding blogs ever. APW encourages women to plan weddings that are empowering and true to themselves, and Meg takes things a step further by boldly yet compassionately taking on weightier issues like money, tradition, family, marriage, and then facilitates mindbogglingly thorough discussions on these topics. I am embarrassed to admit how many times I have approached my husband and said something like: 'So I was reading on A Practical Wedding about [insert weighty marriage issue here] and I think maybe we should [usually something that Meg says often elaborated with seriously intelligent insights from the hundred or so comments by the ladies that frequent her site]. I'm not going to say that APW has changed my life (because that would just be cheesy), but it has so often given me solace, made me feel like I have a community (even if I don't participate that much because I am after all a vendor and that would maybe be a little awkward), and it has ALWAYS given me something to think about. So maybe you could say that it is actually Priscilla who has changed my life, and that is part of why I am so excited about her wedding. Congratulations to Priscilla & Chris! Thanks for showing me whats up, and if I haven't mentioned Zach and I can't wait! Less than two weeks!

Boudoir Manifesto

This wee shoot was a true collaboration between myself and the lovely lady that you see before you. I've never really done a Boudoir shoot before, and I wanted to do something that represented my aesthetic, that played around with the concept of what it is to be sexy in both body and mind, and that used only natural light. Rachel's inspiration was Penelope Cruz, and her seriously nerdy news obsessed fiance. So we arranged for some lofty books to be present, Rachel brought over a copy of the New York Times, and picked out the perfect combination of gauzy numbers that rather than revealed, simply hinted.... I hope that you like it.

Laura & Kenneth

Zach and I had so much fun photographing Laura & Kenneth's wedding! They were married at the Smith Family Chapel, which had a lovely archway and more than few great features that made for some visual treats. I love how Laura looks at Kenneth throughout the ceremony, how they ducked into a room to practice dancing before their official first dance, and their sparkler get away... Jessica & Shawn's Moulin Rouge Themed Wedding

I was super excited about Jessica and Shawn's wedding as soon as Jessica mentioned that she found me through Offbeat Bride. I got even more excited when she mentioned something about a red dress, an absinthe bar, and groom/groomsmen outfits that replicate Mr. Monopoly. However none of this quite prepared me for the absolute blast that their wedding turned out to be. Jessica had not one but two fabulous wedding dresses, each of which made her look positively ravishing! Shawn made me (and I'm pretty sure every other guest there) totally lose it when he was saying his vows, there was a really really cute flower fairy, and the reception was dynamite. What makes a reception dynamite you ask? I'll tell you: you know that a reception is dynamite when the best man and maid of honor exchange outfits, when the groom removes the bride's garter with his teeth, and when everyone is hugging around the absinthe bar. I'm just saying. My favorite pictures are of Jessica positively glowing while she getting ready, of Jessica wiping the tears from Shawn's cheeks just after the ceremony, and of Shawn's best man in his maid of honor outfit.
